Before taking your van onto the public highway you will require at least third party (most policies also include fire and theft) insurance, protecting you from the expense of damages you cause other others and their property. Comprehensive insurance will also protect your vehicle against damages that you are not able to reclaim from a third party.

Insurance cover can now be purchased online from companies such as The Insurance Centre.

Most policies will have an excess, which will be the amount you will be liable for from every claim. The higher the excess the lower your premium, as it becomes more lightly that you will only claim for damages over well over this amount in order to protect / build a no claims bonus.

A no claims bonus will normally be accrued after holding a policy for at least 1 year without any claims being made. You will be considered a lower risk when you have some no claims bonus and will normally enjoy reduced premiums as a result. When you have built up more than one year of no claims bonus, investigate the cost to protect it. You may be able to protect your bonus against a limited number of claims being made.

The amount of cover for sundry items (personal belongings and valuables within the vehicle) will vary from policy to policy, so check the small print to make sure you have sufficient cover.

Remember that you MUST disclose all material facts (anything which may affect the cost of your premium). This will include motoring convictions, previous claims / accidents and modifications to the vehicle.
